Canvas weight is measured in oz (ounces per square yard), and the bigger the number, the thicker and tougher the bag. CUSTA runs from a light 5oz up to a heavy 16oz. In practice, 8oz is the everyday standard, 10–12oz is what you want for retail or anything meant to be kept, and the thick 16oz shows up on structured pouches.

Care and Ageing

Because canvas is cotton, it washes and keeps going, which non-woven cannot do. Here is what to expect over time:

  • Can I wash it? Yes. To protect the print, turn it inside out and hand wash or use a laundry bag. Skip the dryer and bleach.
  • Will it lose its shape? The heavier weights (10–12oz) hold shape best. Hang it to air dry and it keeps its form for a long time.
  • How does it age? It softens and gets more character the more you use it. Natural (undyed) canvas in particular wears nicely.
